The Sagrado Corazón de Jesús del Puerto de Mazarrón, located in Cabezo del Faro, was built thanks to private funds from neighbours, and finally inaugurated in June 1948.
This type of big sculptures are present in most of Catholic countries since 1899, when Pope Leon XIII consecrated the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (hence the name).
In Spain, that occurred in May, 1919, when King Alfonso XIII attended the Sacred Heart consecration in the Cerro de los Ángeles mountains (Madrid). Since then, these sculptures are scattered all over Spain.
