Roman salting factory

IV - V AD centuries • Directions

Puerto de Mazarrón, in late ancient times, was an important economic hub in the Murcia coast related to fishing activities.

During IV-V AD centuries, next to port facilities, a big salting factory was located in a vast extension in the right side of the bay.

The contemporary museum harbors part of the structures of this Roman industrial complex for salting and fish sauce manufacturing purposes. The factory is an Asset of Cultural Interest, both in terms of extension and entity, as well as its contribution to the knowledge of the economic structure during the Imperial Ages, especially in the lower Empire.

This salting factory highlights the importance of fishing industries in the Roman era, vital for cooking purposes in the Empire.

The common parts in all factories were ponds or salting tanks, were fish with salt was macerated. Other products were manufactured (garum), the most famous fish sauce with higher prices in the market.

Remains and a display of the era can be seen in the museum, as well as the rich archaeological heritage of both Mazarrón and Puerto de Mazarrón.
