The Villa Of el Alamillo

I century AD • Directions

Roman houses were built based on the traditional farming character of the patrician families in Rome. It was a housing, self-sufficient hub, usually with infrastructure for farming, workshops and, in the case of coastal housing, industrial areas for salting purposes.

This housing unit was built around the second half of I AD century, to be abandoned only in the late part of the next century, maybe standing in the first years of the III century.

Originally, it was a sloped-terraced building with two zones: a housing unit, with baths, and an adjacent space for services or industrial purposes which can be visited today, with six pools for garum and salting purposes and several rooms surrounding a patio.

The economic activity of the villa would be oriented to small fishing activities related to the salting pools and agricultural exploitation of land. Water comes from the near pool of Alamillo.
